By the time the third phase of the restoration was to be undertaken, earlier investigation work had yielded a quite detailed knowledge of the building. Also by this time, a rapport and mutual understanding had been established among the building owner, the architects, and The Durable Slate Company with respect to the nature of the project. Through research and discussion, agreement had been reached regarding the application of the Secretary of Interior’s standards and guidelines for the historic restoration of this structure.

      The owner understandably wanted to see as many local qualified artisans as could be found to have a hand in the work. In this regard, Durable Slate was highly successful in finding and contracting expert specialists, quite in addition to our own talented craftspeople, who were eager to participate in the restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright treasure.

     Representatives from both the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the National Parks Service have commented on the quality of the craftsmanship which was maintained throughout the project. It was Durable Slate’s faithful adherence to accepted standards and ability to perform exquisite restoration which enabled the owner to receive a significant historic tax credit for this project.

     An example of the bonds of mutual respect and admiration which developed among the various parties involved in the restoration. This tree was decorated by Calaway Design Finish, the crew responsible for the decorative wall finishes, and placed in front of the fireplace during December, 2004 while the interior restoration was being done. An item representing each trade was included on the tree. The humor was much appreciated.
